The peace lily could have been named because it will mostly leave you in peace. This classic houseplant will live happily in anything from quite bright light to shady corners and it only needs watering when its leaves flop over. It’s incredibly easy. Oh, but the name peace lily is actually due to its pure white flowers.
This one differs from the classic peace lily because it has variegated leaves, striped with green and cream. It’s just as easy to care for as its fully green sister, and equally as lovely.
The peace lily is native to tropical rainforests, specifically those of South and Central America. It’s thought it was brought to Europe some time in the late 1800s. It’s been popular as a houseplant ever since because of its easy-going nature.
Despite the name, it’s not actually a lily at all and the white ‘flower’ isn’t a flower. The white part is called a spathe and its job is to attract pollinators. The flowers are actually tiny little things on that yellow spike, or spadix, in the centre of the spathe. Flowers can appear all year, if it gets enough light. When flowers wilt, cut them off at the base. This will encourage new flowers to take their place.
