  • Everyone loves peonies. The huge, fragrant pink flowers of this variety, Sarah Bernhardt, will appear in summer and undoubtedly be the stars of your garden. You can cut them for indoor flower arrangements or enjoy them outside.

This peony has what’s known as ‘double flowers’. Basically, this means it has so many petals that you can’t see the centre of the flower. Producing all those amazing flowers requires the right conditions. Peonies need full sun and regular water so the soil stays moist (but not soggy, please). And a weekly feed in spring and summer will keep them strong and healthy. It’s not too much to ask in return for such great blooms.

Your plant should start flowering next year around May, then continue through June. In autumn, cut the stems right back to the soil. Sounds harsh but it will make your plant conserve all its energy for next year, when it will be back for another spectacular display.

    Did you know?

The peony used to be the national flower of China, but it was later replaced by the plum flower. Bit rude.
