Our top 5 patio plants
Ivy
You’ll have seen Ivy the English ivy climbing churches, trees, pubs… well anything really! She makes a great addition to any outdoor space - if you keep her soil nice and moist she’ll continue to grow and trail quite happily in most light conditions.
Helena
Helena the cycad, will bring a real taste of the tropics to your patio. She’ll thrive with light watering, and isn’t fussy about the amount of light she gets. Plants will naturally grow towards sunlight, so turn her regularly to keep those striking fronds in shape.
Vivi
Vivi the lemon tree is one of our most popular outdoor plants. Citrus trees aren’t usually associated with the British climate, but lemon trees will fare just fine on a sunny patio. Give Vivi some liquid fertiliser once a month in spring and summer to encourage her to bear more fruit.
Laura
Beloved by the ancient Greeks and Romans, bay trees have a rich history, and make a striking addition to your patio. Laura is fairly thirsty, so keep her regularly topped up with water in the summer months, and less so in winter. You can also use her leaves when cooking, just drop a few into sauces, curries, and stews.
Laurens
Bring a taste of the provinces to your patio with Laurens the French lavender. Unlike Laurens’ English cousin, Vanda, he thrives best in warm and dry conditions, so pop him in a sunny spot in soil that drains well. His flowers will be at their most full and beautiful during the summer months.

Tall patio plants
Tall patio plants are a great way to make the most of your outside space. Most patios won’t be particularly roomy, so you’ll want to be clever about where you’re placing your plants.
Much in the same way as tall buildings, tall patio plants help you achieve lofty ambitions, while taking up relatively little floor space. Tall plants might seem a little intimidating, but we have some that are super easy to care for, and will elevate your patio with fabulous foliage and dramatic greenery.
Some of our favourite tall patio plants are Laura the bay tree, Phoebe the tropical canary island date palm, and Boo the fargesia bamboo.
Patio plants for shade
While most patio plants will need a good amount of sunlight, there’s no need to worry if you have a shady outdoor space. There are plenty of patio plants that are happy in low light conditions.
No outdoor plant will cope well with total shade. But if the sun only partially reaches your patio, these plants will be just fine. Some of our best patio plants for low light include Bree the black bamboo and Mae the dwarf fan palm.
Bree grows very quickly, and will act as the perfect natural shelter if your patio gets a little breezy. Mae is sturdy as you like, and her long leaves can grow up to 1.5 metres in the right conditions.
Low-maintenance patio plants
We’ve all forgotten to water our plants, these things happen! This only becomes a problem when dealing with plants that need a little more TLC. Thankfully there are plenty of hardy patio plants that will forgive your forgetfulness.
Our tough, almost unkillable patio plants can survive quite happily in a range of temperature and light conditions, making them a good choice for novice plant owners.
You've already met Bree and Mae, but Fats and Amrita are just as hardy. Fats the fatsia japonica thrives in most light conditions, while Amrita the angel hair won’t mind if you forget to water her now and then.
Evergreen patio plants
Evergreen patio plants will keep their green leaves all year round. From tropical palms to cheerful ferns, there’s a way to keep your patio green and serene.
Evergreen patio plants come in a variety of colours, shapes, and sizes. From colourful plants like Coral the heuchera purple palace, to climbing plants like Jazz the star jasmine, there's an evergreen plant to suit any patio.
Easy patio plants
Beautiful patio plants don't have to be complicated to care for. There are plenty of easy patio plants that look great without being complete divas.
Easy patio plants are also perfect for beginners. Starting out with low maintenance patio plants helps get your fingers green without too much stress. These outdoor plants usually thrive in a range of lighting conditions and have simple watering needs.
Our selection of easy patio plants includes unusual citruses like Lionel, our calamondin tree. Cordlylines, like Kirby and his siblings, are also some of the easiest patio plants to care for.
