Our top 5 windowsill plants
Ivy
English ivy is a familiar sight, usually seen trailing and climbing happily over anything that stays still. She’ll continue to grow, climb, and trail quite happily in most light conditions throughout the year, just remember to keep her soil nice and moist.
Vinnie
Bring a splash of pink, red or white to your windowsill with Vinnie the cyclamen. Vinnie is a fabulous flowering perennial, so you’ll be able to enjoy his flowers throughout the winter and into spring. During the winter months when he’s actively growing, try to give him as much bright, indirect light as possible.
Archie
Archie is our carex, or Japanese sedge grass. He’s at his happiest in a sunny spot, but will survive just fine in partial shade too. Remember to give him a yearly haircut in late winter or early spring - just comb your hands through his leaves to remove any dead growth.
Tim
His small round flowers may be pretty, but he’s a hardy plant perfect for even the breeziest of window boxes. Expose him to as much sunlight as possible if you want to encourage more flowers. Pinch off any old flowers to keep him looking tidy and to promote new growth.
Diana
Diana, or Dianthus barbarini purple pico, was adored by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Given her pink-ombre blooms, it’s not hard to see why. If one of her flowers look sickly, give them a little snip with a pair of secateurs - make sure you cut just above one of the leaf nodes to encourage new growth.

Low-maintenance windowsill plants
There’s no shame in forgetting to water your windowsill plants, these things happen! Plants that need a little more TLC won’t cope too well being thirsty, so thankfully there are plenty of hardy windowsill plants that will forgive your forgetfulness.
Our hardy, almost unkillable windowsill plants can survive quite happily through more challenging conditions, like high winds or low light. This makes them a good choice for those new to urban gardening.
Sandy the sedum spurium variegatum is a true outdoor plant - she loves sunshine, can cope in temperatures as low as -15 degrees, and will survive quite happily on rainwater most of the year. Amrita the angel hair is tough and won’t mind if you forget to water her now and then.
Small windowsill plants
Windowsills aren’t renowned for their spaciousness, so opting for small windowsill plants is a great way to make the most of a tight space.
Small windowsill plants are the perfect way to spruce up any micro-space in need of a little greenery. Some of our favourite small windowsill plants are Fenton the mahogany fern, Vanda the English lavender, and Vinnie the cyclamen.

No windowsill plant will cope well with total shade, but if the sun only partially reaches your windowsill, these plants will be just fine. Some of our best windowsill plants for low light include Noëlle the bacopa snowflake and Fenton the mahogany fern.
Noëlle likes the sun, but dappled sun or partial shade will also suit her fine. Fenton is a total shade-loving plant, so if you’ve got a place that gets very little sun, that’s his dream.
Evergreen windowsill plants
