  • A rare and unusual houseplant, it’s easy to see why this alocasia is much sought after. Appropriately nicknamed alocasia stingray, its leaves look like a fever of stingrays (yes, that’s the collective noun - who knew?) winding through the air.

Like a lot of alocasia, this plant grows natively in humid forests across Asia. Also like most alocasia, it likes those conditions mimicked in a home. Because it’s used to growing under other trees, it likes bright light but not direct sunlight. It loves slightly moist soil and lots of humidity

It’s also fairly greedy. Most plants like a feed with liquid fertiliser once per month in spring and summer, but alocasia stingray will happily eat more. Every three weeks would suit him. Give him all that and one day he could grow nearly two metres tall.

    Did you know?

There are at least 79 species of Alocasia. Maximum respect to you if you can name them all.
